Random things.

Did Luther make, “There’s No Stopping Us Now?”

JD2718 suggests I don’t go in for this kind of thing. He means the tagging game of posting eight random things about yourself. And he’s kind of right. Here are the normal rules:

1. Let others know who tagged you.
2. Players start with 8 random facts about themselves.
3. Those who are tagged should post these rules and their 8 random facts.
4. Players should tag 8 other people and notify them they have been tagged.

But I’ll play it a little different. Here are 8 random things I’ve seen or thought about at the NEA RA:

1. When people hear Dennis Kucinich they always say, “I like what he says. Too bad he can’t win. Did you see what his wife looks like?”
2. If we had merged with the AFT back when it was on the agenda, we would have over 4 million members in a single public school employees union. Boy would Andy Rotherham be pissed.
3. I have no idea what all the standing rules and by-law votes are about. People actually line up to speak to them. Why?
4. When Dennis Kucinich spoke today, he mentioned Piaget in his speech. The speaker is projected on a number of big screens around the hall, and it subtitled for the hearing impaired. The translator typed Piaget as “Pia Jay.” Everyone in the hall chuckled. Nobody outside the hall would have gotten the joke.
5. I can’t find a pretzel cart anywhere on the street around the Convention Center.
6. Wanamaker’s has become Macy’s on Market Street. The entry way on Market still has the small tile mosaic with the Wanamaker’s initials. What happened to Gimbels?
7. They play “There’s No Stopping Us Now” all the time during breaks. Who made the original? I thought it was Luther Vandross. Of course I could google it. That’s too easy.
8. Why did it take us four years to pass a resolution against the war? Now that 80% of the American people oppose the war…what, we didn’t want to be too out front on this?

    Nice twist. Some questions.

What’s the deal with Kucinich’s wife? And won’t anyone endorse him?

In New York State, we have an umbrella organization – NYSUT, New York State United Teachers – that brings together AFT and NEA locals. Do any other states do this?

No major organization like the NEA will endorse him because he is too far to the Left of it.

The deal with his wife: She is half his age, twice his height and pretty. Some people think there is something wrong with that. Not me. On the other hand, she walked out on stage with him and he never introduced her or mentioned her. So she was left to stand over to the side and do the candidate’s wife look.

In some state’s the AFT and NEA are merged. Not Illinois. At a RA about a decade ago, a move to merge the two unions on a national level was rejected by the NEA delegates by a two to one margin. I was on the losing side.
