Putting more pressure on Governor Blago, representatives from the Illinois Federation of teachers (IFT), Illinois Education Association (IEA) and Illinois AFL-CIO care calling for an increase in the Illinois income tax by 1/4 % per year for four years. They claim that this would raise approximately $800 million per year.
Blago’s opposition to progressive taxation for school funding is not likely to hold.
House Speaker Michael Madigan is now supporting the income tax increase and is saying it has broad support in the legislature. Senate leader Emil Jones has now moved away from Blago’s no-income tax position as well.
