Thanks to the Columbus Education Association for adding me to their blogroll. Right back at you!
A few more words about Ravitch.
Should a government agency be keeping a file on private citizens containing information about their views that may be critical of government policies and programs? Should they use those files to wage a campaign of intimidation against their critics?
Absolutely not.
But that is what NY’s Department of Education under Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein did to Diane Ravitch.
Is this just a case of the rough and tumble world of city politics, New York or Chicago style?
In the era of Karl Rove, Dick Chaney, Alberto Gonzalez and George Bush II? I don’t think so.
Does this require me to uphold Ravitch as the greatest educational theorist since John Dewey?
Absolutely not.
It is interesting that what got lost in some of this debate is Ravitch’s claim that the recent deal between Randi Weingarten’s UFT and Bloomberg over performance pay was not really merit pay. She says the UFT snookered Bloomberg.
This is ironic. Some of the harshest critics of Weingarten and the recent deal coming from inside the UFT are big defenders of Ravitch and her position which has been recently critical of merit pay.

If not Utah, where?
Today Utah voters are going to reject a sweeping voucher plan in spite millions of dollars in advertising and the backing of right-wing opponents of public schools. If there’s no support for this junk in Utah, not exactly the poster child of blue state liberalism, what state does support it?
The National School Board Association, not my closest friends, but allies on this, reports on the Utah vote here.
