Three over coffee.

We hit the road early this morning, hoping to beat the winter ice storm that was predicted to hit between Springfield and Chicago. We grabbed some coffee at the McDonald’s in Bloomington. Steve got the new McSkillet Burrito to go with his coffee. I just grabbed a sausage biscuit with mine. Steve thought the burrito was good. And I like McDonald’s coffee.

The predicted ice storm did hit. I-55 was scary between Springfield and Bloomington. There were lots of cars and trucks in ditches. It turned into snow about 50 miles north of Bloomington which made driving a little safer. But it still turned a 3 hour drive into a 5 hour drive.

Perhaps someone in the IEA might consider making the Winter Advocacy Conference the Spring Advocacy Conference.

  • Hope you’re getting better.

Something must be going around. Both bloggers JD2718 and Eduwonkette report feeling crappy and took some blogging sick days this week. Send them a get well wish.

  • Elgin teachers file notice of intent to strike.

The Elgin Teachers Association have filed a notice of intent to strike. Illinois law requires 10 days notice before teachers can walk. It does not mean they will walk in 10 days. It fulfills a legal requirement. Elgin teachers rejected a TA in October and they and the board are working with a mediator to resolve the issues.

  • While I was in Springfield so were the goofballs.

Continuing their year-long attack on the people of Illinois, governor Blago and the legislature are now working to undo even the small pittance that they approved and sent to the governor’s desk in the way of school funding.

“No Child” in Boston.

Nilaja Sun’s “No Child.”

If you are a regular reader of PREA Prez you know that I am an unabashed fan of Nilaja Sun in her one-woman performance of No Child. I saw it with my family in NY last year and immediately fell in love.

When the show came to Chicago, I got a group of 25 teachers to join me in seeing the show at Lookingglass Theater by the Water Tower. It lost none of its force by traveling to the midwest.

Now she is performing in Boston. If you are a reader of this blog in Boston, run don’t walk…
