Parsons School of Design is part of the New School in NY. The New School’s president Bob Kerrey received a vote of no confidence by the New School’s full-time faculty last December.

So he did what any good educational leader would do. He fired 42 professors at the design school.

Not for financial reasons. Actually, he claims he didn’t really fire them.

The New School, for its part, disputes that characterization of the changes. “This is not a disciplinary action — no one’s been fired,” said Tim Marshall, the university’s interim provost. “As you update the curriculum, you have to look at the best fit.”

They’re working at Parsons this semester. They’ve been told not to show up next semester. But they’re not fired. It’s just an updating of the curriculum.

How did the “updated” faculty find out they were being “updated?”

By e-mail.

“We thank you for your work with us at the New School and wish you well in your future endeavors,” the message read.
