Legal milestone in court fight for Illinois school fair funding.
April 20, 2009
For the first time an Illinois court has ruled that a suit may go forward that challenges the way the state funds public education and that it discriminates against black and hispanic students.
Although two earlier funding suits never made it past a motion to dismiss, Cook County Judge Martin Agran found the 2003 Illinois Civil Rights Act provided the legal footing to proceed.
“This is a huge milestone,” said Chicago Urban League CEO Cheryle Jackson. “We just kicked this into a civil rights battle.”
