Walter Cronkite reportedly near death at 92. Updated: Maybe not.
Walter Cronkite, who anchored the CBS news as I was growing up, is reportedly near death at the age of 92.
Cronkite was known as “the most trusted man in America,” and the story goes that when Cronkite made his 1968 on-air pronouncement that the Vietnam War was unwinnable it led to such a shift in public opinion against the war that President Lyndon Johnson observed, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost America.”
He also was no fan of the Iraq war. “It’s a terrible disaster. Look at the loss of lives of our young Americans there and those who have been maimed for life, for what purpose? No purpose we can define,” Cronkite said.
Updated: The Chicago Sun-Tmes says reports of Cronkites failing health are overstated.
