Obama wants $1.3 more Race money.

January 19, 2010

John Merrow, usually a cheerleader, has doubts about the success of  Arne Duncan’s Race to the Top.

While the Republican’s favorite Obama cabinet member is probably looking at the results of this round of RttT grant proposals and feeling pretty good, there were a lot of no votes from states, districts and union locals. There’s a lot of resistance out here.

Today, President Obama is still asking for another $1.3 billion for the program.

President Barack Obama will seek an additional $1.35 billion in next year’s budget to expand the Race to the Top competition, paving the way for the popular economic-stimulus grant program to become a permanent part of the administration’s education arsenal. The Obama administration also will spell out that it wants to open up Race to the Top to school districts as well, who would have their own grant contest and would not have to compete against states
