Wow! My drivers didn’t showand when I went to find them I found out that we are having an amazing event here. All, well, most of the high school students, approx 110, are having a silent sit- in protest over suggested cuts to our support staff, especially our tech guy lovingly called Super Curt. The list of RIFs has not been published yet but in a small town it is already “out there”. The kids organized this by themselves and plan to sit-in until lunch to protest the cuts. They are sitting in the classroom hallways, being quiet and repsectfull. Our Principal addressed them saying that she supported their action and as long as they were quiet and not disruptive she would not try to alter the “assembly”. She has also suggested they write to the school board members. Papers and pens started flying. Later she returned to suggest that they also write to their legislators who are the real reason behind all of this financial misery. Again, papers moved quickly. While the teachers cannot “support” through action they are simply supervising their classes. I have not actaully seen anything like this since college days and Vietnam. It is a tremendous statement from our students who recognize how this will affect them and they are taking action. I have suggested the student council try to organize a similar event statewide. Wouldn’t that be great. We are in our second hour of this sit-in, the kids are great, and I’ve just been informed that Channel 20 news (Spfld) is on its way down.
Okay, Morrisonville is tiny but we are DOING something!!!!
