“I am doing this for my students and my family who are undocumented. It’s heart breaking to see the separation of families,” said Salvador Jimenez, 24, one of the participants in the civil disobedience action, and a local artist and teacher. “Getting arrested is nothing compared to the struggle that people are already going through by being undocumented. It’s time for legalization.”
Suburban Broadview is where the federal detention center is located and where undocumented immigrants are taken. This morning 22 activists were arrested in front of the Broadview center. They were demanding that the Obama administration keep its campaign promise of enacting immigration reform.
Saturday, May 1st at 1PM in Chicago’s Union Square, thousands will march in support of that same demand and to protest the anti-immigrant law signed last week by Arizona’s governor.
