John Burge was a dirty Chicago cop who tortured people to get convictions. He got those convictions and innocent people went to prison.
He committed his crimes in the 80s. And those who knew about it, or could have done something about it, did nothing. Richard Daley, the present pathetic Mayor of my city was State’s Attorney at the time and could have prosecuted Burge for torture. But he let the statute of limitations expire.
Instead a handful of seekers of justice, including lawyers like Flint Taylor, kept at it. In 2003 they won a civil suit against Burge.
Then, finally the federal attorney filed perjury and obstruction charges.
Today, a Chicago jury convicted Burge on all charges.
“We’re totally elated at the verdict,” (Flint Taylor) said. “It’s 30 years too late. We still have plenty to do to get people out of jail. He should have been convicted of torture not perjury — but this is a good day.”
