The further adventures of mayoral control: Daley’s pick for CPS CEO.
July 10, 2010
The Sun-Times is reporting that the Mayor and CPS boss Ron Huberman are fighting over who will be the new CEO of the CPS.
Excuse me if I’m skeptical of Huberman taking a stand against The Mayor about anything, including the color of his socks.
According to Sun-Times City Hall reporter, Fran Spielman, and CPS reporter, Rosalind Rossi, Daley wants to appoint his daughter’s catholic school principal, Mary Ellen Conan, to the CEO position.
If Mary Ellen Caron is tapped as chief education officer, she would be the first white and non-CPS educator to assume that post since Daley won control of the city’s public schools in 1995.
Only 9% of CPS student enrollment is white.
Spielman and Rossi report:
The behind-the-scenes power struggle over how to fill a spot that has been vacant since June 30 marks the first overt sign of tension between Huberman and Daley in the 18 months since the mayor tapped his former chief of staff and CTA president to replace Duncan, City Hall sources said.
But forget Huberman. It will be far more interesting to hear what the new CTU President, Karen Lewis, has to say when she returns from the AFT convention in Seattle.
