Little known DC head education bureaucrat quits.
Compared to the just defeated Mayor Adrian Fenty and his school’s chancellor Michelle Rhee, Kerri Briggs isn’t exactly your big name DC education personality.
Briggs is, or was until now, the Secretary of Education for the District of Columbia.
She’s a Republican and her main responsibility was to oversee the District’s Race to the Top application and to organize the adoption of Core Standards. These are both centerpieces to the Duncan USDE agenda.
In a failed transparent attempt to bolster Mayor Fenty and Chancellor Rhee, Duncan saw to it that DC received a RttT grant.
The Washington Post’s education reporter Bill Turque writes that Briggs “chafed at the tight controls” of working for Fenty. But maybe Briggs just saw the writing on the wall and knows that changes are coming to DC now that the wicked witch is off on her own broom.
