Teacher ranking road show heads for Broadway.

October 21, 2010

What started in LA is now moving to NY.

The Department of Education has promised to release personal value added teacher rankings to the press. The rankings are based on student test scores at the beginning of the year and at the end. No research supports the use of student test scores as a reliable measure of teacher effectiveness.

The teachers union plans to go to court to block the release of the rankings.

A NY teacher commented at Gotham Schools:

I am a teacher who has wanted to know my rating for a very long time. I cannot get a hold of this information no matter how hard I try.
AND YET, the Department -WHO CLAIMS TO CARE ABOUT GOOD TEACHING AND THE EDUCATION OF OUR STUDENTS- will release it to the press.
To the press goes the information of my ‘teaching quality’, but not to me; the one who wants to improve.
Perhaps, just perhaps, the DOE cares NOTHING about teaching, but cares EVERYTHING about perception.
How dare they not even offer this information to teachers? How dare they NOT make it easy for pedagogues to find this information out? and then release it to the press!
I now believe my supervisors at Tweed care nothing about what happens in their schools, or to their students.
I hope they go soon. My support is with my union.

I find this practice dispicable, and so do most of my colleagues. If you want to know how your CHILD is doing, make an appointment, and come to the school. IF you want to know how I’m doing, my principal rates me. This is embarrassing and degrading, and NO not everything is the public’s business. It’s is certainly not about the children or their welfare, but we already know that.
