The IEA’s secret endorsement of Judy Topinka and why you should ignore it.
The race for Illinois Comptroller isn’t one of the hot races on Tuesday. Most people couldn’t tell you who is running. And most teachers couldn’t tell you who the IEA endorsed. Even if you go to their web page which is filled with election stuff.
The Democrat is David Miller. He was on the platform yesterday with President Obama. He’s a young African-American state rep from Dolton who won the appreciation of delegates to last year’s RA for strongly supporting HB 174.
The Republican is Judy Barr Topinka.
Here’s what she had to say about teacher pensions in today’s Southtown:
Topinka said pension reform could involve a range of options, including allowing people the chance to make contributions to a 401(k) plan or make their own investments elsewhere.
So, who did the IEA endorse? David Miller, right? A young, progressive African-American state rep from the south suburbs who champions tax equity and support for public schools.
Or the Republican who wants to do away with TRS and turn it into a stock gambling system?
Nope. The IEA endorsed Topinka.
Ignore them.
And also their endorsement of Rosemary Mulligan.
