Winter break starts now.

December 17, 2010

The holiday sing for parents was yesterday. The kids were all cute and happy as they sang the usual mix of holiday tunes. At Wednesday’s rehearsal (which is also the opportunity for all of us to perform just for each other), the teachers and staff sang Rudolph while the nine members of the Carpenter Ukelele Society played our ukes. It was our first public performance and I think we were spectacular.

Outside, things look grim here in Illinois.

It certainly doesn’t look good for teachers at the hearings of the hastily formed Illinois House Committee on Educational Reform. in spite of the objections of the IFT and the IEA, this committee is hell-bent on sending a bill to the General Assembly this session which may seriously impact tenure, seniority, teacher evaluation and the right to strike. Some or all of these will very likely end up in a bill. As Julie Woestehoff of Parents United for Responsible Education (PURE) testified yesterday, the data doesn’t support any of these phony solutions.

But it is Friday. Our two-week break starts at 3:30 this afternoon. I’m looking forward to my time with Anne, kids, grand kids, cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and in-laws.

I don’t think the General Assembly has passed a law against that.

Yet.
