IEA budget hearings. Before the storm.
Tomorrow around 6PM a blizzard is expected to hit Chicago dumping up to 20 inches of snow on the City with winds up to 40 miles an hour by Wednesday noon.
Tonight I’ll be heading over to the Region office of the IEA for a budget hearing in preparation for the Representative Assembly in March.
Passing the IEA budget is the main formal business of the RA. Discussions around the budget provide an opportunity to raise questions about IEA policy and direction.
Tonight we get to look at the office expenses and salary of the Director of Field Services ($492,620), and Area Coordinators (total salaries of $1,059,19). We can ask about why Collective Bargaining Support, one of the main service to members, is budgeted at $55,630 and minority involvement training is budgeted at $10,000.
The IEA budget process is a transparent one. The budget debate on the RA floor can be long and heated or quick, done in the plunk of a gavel on the podium. The budget requires a two-thirds vote to be approved.
There should be ample time to discuss the office of the Executive Director, expenses and salary ($419,335) .
If only the legislative and political activities of the leadership were as transparent as the budget process.
The salary of the President of the United States is $400,000 which includes a $50,000 expense allowance.
