Teacher pensions dodged a bullet last week.
Many of us let out an audible groan when we clicked on the IEA video which was posted just prior to the start of the Illinois General Assembly veto session.
The video featured the IEA’s head of Government Relations Jim Reed. He told the members that there was no need to issue a call to action. “We know you are busy,” Reed said. “And there is no bill.”
But Jim Broadway, writing in his authoritative Springfield newsletter, reports that teacher pensions “dodged a bullet” last week in the veto session’s first of two meetings. And he suggests that momentum is building for passage of a pension-killing bill.
Broadway is not quite as sanguine as the IEA state leadership seems to be.
Following last week’s news that it appeared as if GOP House leader Tom Cross might have the votes for a bill that Reed first declared didn’t exist, the leadership did declare a formal Call to Action.
Let’s hope it is not too late.
