It’s funny. My son is 3. We have tons of books we get from students, parents, family, garage sales, giveaways, etc. I’ve read that book a few times, and thought – while some of the words are big (not rare for a children’s book) – that it’s a nice story about workers exercising some power to ensure their needs are fulfilled. And of course, the damn ducks have to get greedy and make the owner regret giving his workers anything!
But it was published in 2000. I though, “surely, some crazy group would have expressed anger by now.” Oh, 11 years later is a good time, I suppose.

Let’s Make Deal: SB2404Quite honestly, I was at first befuddled when it came to choices as a retiree looking at SB2404. I’m not good at choices. I lose at Blackjack without fail.Could be worse. I could be an active teacher looking at SB2404. Thank goodness I’m not an active anymore. The spreadsheet on the IEA Fact Sheet reads like a graduate level test […]
I'm in one of two Queens high schools that still has a teacher cafeteria. It's under threat of closure, as not enough teachers are patronizing it lately. A food truck has parked by our school and has become pretty popular. Mayor Bloombucks has decreed if teacher cafes don't make enough money, too bad for the teachers. There's something in […]
Those of you who were at yesterday’s rally downtown saw a star in the making. Asean Johnson is a 9 year old from Marcus Garvey Elementary School. He also highhandedly destroys Mayor Emanuel’s argument that these schools need to be closed for the good of the children. Any school that produces a student like […]
From Matt Kramer, Co-CEO of Teach For America: As white person, I thk role of white ppl in ed reform is a fair Q. But, I believe answer lies in allyship, not abdicating responsibility. Susan Spicka is a public school parent in Central Pennsylvania and a strong advocate for high-quality public education. She wrote this post after her daughters finished their NINTH days of state testing in elementary school. The sentence that bowled me over was when she said her fifth grade daughter was crying for fear that if […]
