Overworked, understaffed and still broke.
December 20, 2011
Which state has the lowest number of government workers per capita in the nation?
Scott Walker’s Wisconsin? Chris Christie’s New Jersey. Florida? Ohio? Michigan?
Certainly not patronage rich Illinois. A state with a Democratic governor and Democratic Party controlled House and Senate.
So, if Ty Fahner is right and Illinois is broke, how come?
It’s not a case of too much money being spent on bloated government.
Tax breaks for the rich and powerful is more like it.
Says AFSCME’s director Henry Bayer:
“The men and women who do the real work of state government deserve thanks, not blame. Despite skeleton staffs, unmanageable caseloads and dangerous overcrowding, they care for the elderly and disabled, protect children from abuse, help struggling families and keep prisons safe.
“The state’s fiscal problems are caused by backward budget priorities and an unfair tax structure that offers special treatment for big corporations and rich individuals.”
