What a good point. Here’s the way I see it. Obama is staying away from commenting on this kind of thing, as he also got a lot of heat for approving of what happened in Rhode Island. However, he is sensitive to his base so while he’s talking up unions all over the place, it might not be a bad idea to ask if we’re included, (using these turnaround models as example). Is this what HE envisions for public education?
Providing waivers for NCLB and wanting colleges to be affordable is hardly enough, and given that Obama is often a reactor, public teachers need to be heard..
People must understand that this is a planned strategy, and it’s not doing somethng “for” the kids. When you fire a staff, make a turnaround, and do something NON public, does someone have to hit you over the head to see what it’s about? Ed Shultz has started to cover this and is talkng about Rahm, and his stance on public teacher’s unions, so i’m going to keep sending him this information.
There is something else that you can do. Many educators who are extremely unhappy with Obama’s educational strategies (starting w/his appointment of Arne Duncan) have been responding to e-mail requests from the Re-elect Obama Campaign in the negative, saying such things as, “I was a great supporter (volunteer, contributor) of the Obama Campaign in 2008. I truly believed in his platform. However, at this point, I cannot support him in 2012, as per the failing education policy put forth by this administration, which began w/the appointment of Arne Duncan as D.o.Ed. Secretary. We were expecting more for our students than a continuation of NCLB….” well, you can fill in the rest. If ALL of you answer requests from the Re-elect Obama people–AND EVERY TIME you receive a solicitation–answer in this manner. Make it clear that while you might support his other policies, you cannot, as an educator, support the continuation of Sec. Duncan & the ridiculous Race to Nowhere.
Again–& I agree w/you, filly4rights–we need to make ourselves heard, &, in so doing, will, hopefully, GET SOMETHING DONE!!!
Good idea, and since I broke down and got a twitter account I try and answer comments by mayors like Cory Booker who says: I fully support teachers, that’s why I’m a “choice” advocate. Melissa Harris Perry had just had a good disscussion on education, and he came on later. She had Moskowitz on who I think (unless it was a joke) might be running for Mayor of NYC.
Dear members of the NYC City Councilmembers, I get it. You want to hold the MTA accountable somehow for their abhorrent misuse of funds, consistently delayed projects, and general failure to produce a good service for the amount of money the average New Yorker pays. It’s hard to blame the average service worker, but the guys at the top need to hear th […]
How much political heat is too much in an election year?
