Teachers in Grayslake hit the bricks.
January 16, 2013
Thousands of students are out of school Wednesday in the northwest suburbs.
Teachers were expected to hit the picket lines later Wednesday.
Late-night negotiations between the Grayslake Federation of Teachers and school district officials broke down Tuesday night. District 46 includes seven schools in Grayslake, Third Lake, Hainesville, Round Lake, Round Lake Park, Round Lake Beach, and Lake Villa.
At issue are salary increases for advanced education and retirement benefits.
The strike includes about 325 teachers and affects 4,000 students at several elementary and middle schools.
Some parents talked to ABC7 Chicago during the last-minute contract talks Tuesday night.
”If people deserve a raise, I believe in that for the work they do. By the same token, we the parents and the kids get hurt,” said one parent.
“I hope they learn from the other districts and can negotiate and come to an agreement real quick,” another parent said.

And, as in past strikes, the first words out of parents’ mouths are, “Who’s going to watch my kid(s) while I’m at work?”
