I urge whoever speaks for teachers in a meeting where Madigan deigns to speak with representatives of teachers to push for a graduated income tax. Illinois’ problem is one of REVENUE, NOT A DEFICIT CREATED BY TEACHERS. The future of this state is at stake. It is a problem the whole state must solve. To think that teachers are the ones at fault is the greatest irony. Teachers subsidized this state for years. Bills were paid from their pension funds instead of honestly levied state taxes. Who would teach in a state that behaves in this fashion? No honor, just scapegoating its reliable, faithful, essential workers!

“Leaving the judges out of pension reform: ‘I would call this buying off the judges. It’s a very sad situation…’” (Ann Lousin, a professor at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago who helped draft the Illinois Constitution in 1970, from Judges left out of Illinois pension reform plan). Are we to believe, as Madigan and other liars and thieves do, that Illin […]
Let’s Make Deal: SB2404Quite honestly, I was at first befuddled when it came to choices as a retiree looking at SB2404. I’m not good at choices. I lose at Blackjack without fail.Could be worse. I could be an active teacher looking at SB2404. Thank goodness I’m not an active anymore. The spreadsheet on the IEA Fact Sheet reads like a graduate level test […]
Hi. I'm New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, and I think it's about time we addressed bullying. Personally I've had it with bullying. That's why I'm making 80 thousand teachers give lessons on it. After all, I've made them come back for full school days on June 24th and 25th, after they've given grades and their […]

Maybe he thought they were going to lay palms at his feet? No one booed. But the graduates of Millersville University didn't exactly cheer Gov. Tom Corbett either Saturday. In introducing Corbett as the class of 2013's commencement speaker, Michael Warfel, chairman of the Council of Trustees, explained the difficult fiscal conditions the governor […]
Dan Meyer has called our attention to the recent NCTM keynote by Uri Treisman:This is the core of Treisman's critique:So the notion was: "Let's focus on teachers as the central driver of reform and rethink how we evaluate teachers." They had the view that teachers were the single most important in-school factor in student achievement. And […]

Researchers Sarah Reckhow of Michigan State University and doctoral student Jeffrey Snyder reported at an AERA session that foundation giving is increasingly concentrated on a small number of recipients. Foundation funding is moving away from giving to public schools–attended by 90% of American students–and is going instead to “challengers” to the system, es […]
