The in box: Chicago Teachers Union endorses Will Guzzardi.

February 13, 2012 (CHICAGO, IL)–The Chicago Teachers Union, the largest teachers union in the nation, has endorsed Will Guzzardi for 39th District State Representative, confirming what recent endorsements have indicated: Guzzardi offers the best plan for high-quality public education and is the progressive choice for 39th District voters.

“I am excited and honored to receive the endorsement of the teachers and support staff who educate our children and anchor our neighborhoods,” said Guzzardi.  “I pledge to work with CTU to make neighborhood schools in the 39th District the very best our children deserve.”

Guzzardi’s education plan centers on research-based reforms, such as diversifying curricula to include arts, music and languages; guaranteeing age-appropriate class sizes; and providing educator support and training  that ensures our teachers have the best education tools available in the classroom. He also plans to work closely with Local School Councils, organizations that have demonstrated the importance of engaged parents, teachers, administrators and community members.

The CTU House of Delegates voted to endorse fewer candidates than in previous election years to concentrate the union’s resources on key races and provide targeted assistance to the most promising candidates.  Critical issues face the Chicago Public Schools, including a record number of schools slated for turnaround or closure and three bills in the Illinois General Assembly regarding class sizes, school closures, and fiscal accountability. The CTU is the largest union local in the state of Illinois, with over 30,000 members.
