  1. Gee whiz! The very reason teacher tenure (job protection) laws were enacted. To keep cheapo School Boards from constantly dumping experienced teachers in favor of inexpensive rookies. Vallas makes me feel like I feel asleep and awakened in 1917.

  2. But this was early Vallas–before he realized that he could hold an entire school district (Bridgeport) hostage to pay for HIS healthcare even though he had already given a prior date of resignation (as he was about ready to be tossed out). Teachers do not deserve benefits but he sure does and will manipulate/coerce/bring on the lawyers to get them..

      1. Wow. Thanks. Let’s put this in our media as a reminder of what an arrogant and ignorant leech Quinn chose as a running mate.
Is the quote the reason Quinn picked Vallas? To counter the unions? What other reason could there be?

  3. It all boils down to values. There are those that only value money and see people as only a means to make money. If they spout anything different they are lying.

  4. Because it’s great for us and our kids to be deprived of careers. A role model if ever there was one.

  5. Funny, I feel the same way about politicians–no more than 10 years. So let’s see, given that formula of no more than 10 years, that would mean Madigan, Cullerton, Cross, Quinn, et.al., would be out of a job. Well, what’s good for the goose, is good for the gander! There might be some good for IL politics after all if we do the same to politicians as Vallas is suggesting for teachers! As far as teachers loosing their jobs after 10 years, if its quid pro quo, it looks like there could be some legislative spots opening up for them to fill.

  6. This business of firing older employees to replace them with lower cost younger ones is widespread and very illegal. He sounds like he would fit right in as a Walmart manager.

    1. Unfortunately the Supreme Court ruled at least a decade ago that if keeping older workers is a financial drain on a company they can be fired to preserve assets. I believe it was a case against IBM. Iwould hate to see what this court would say about public employees. Ageism is alive and well. The courts have erected even more barriers for victims if this abuse making it much harder to prove in court.

  7. Amazing how the politicians whined about going without a paycheck from Quinn when they couldn’t come up with a solution for the pension reform, but I know they sure love their pensions too!! Three years ago, the then Senator Chris Lauzen told me that my Rep. Tim Schmitz was going to retire when his 20 years were up, then go back to fighting fires to put more money into that retirement fund! Guess what, Schmitz retired this year and has done just that! They’re all a bunch of hypocrites!

  8. They are chasing many fine young people out of the teaching profession. If they keep it up, there will be slim pickin’s for hiring teachers. They don’t care what happens to the future of education or the kids, because by the time it all goes in the toilet, the greedy politicians and corporate jerks will have made their fortunes and be laughing all the way to the bank!!

  9. If there are inhumane people that think that teachers whom paid a great deal of money for their education, should not work more than ten years. Then I will totally agree. When politicians’ run for only one office and because they are public servants, then they should not work for a salary. And School Administrators should be teachers for ten years in the classroom and no one could be in administration unless they have degrees in admin Education. So how do you like those apples?
