The Chicago Police Department has routinely spied on activist groups during the past six years, police records obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times show — including union members, anti-Olympics protesters, anarchists, the Occupy movement, NATO demonstrators and critics of the Chinese government.

Dear Lily:

I am a thirty-seven year classroom veteran, a former local EA president, and a lifelong NEA member. I am a member, and I have concerns.

The internet has been buzzing with the news of an upcoming endorsement of Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Presidential nominee. In particular, there is talk of a procedural move that will sidestep the general membership and their representatives. The most likely motivation would seem to be that Clinton’s campaign is sinking, and it is reported that while you admit Sanders is more in line with our interests, you see Clinton as more electable.

I am asking you, as a member– please don’t do this.

At no time in the history of Region 473 have logos for anything other than AYSO appeared on the players’ jerseys, so it came as quite a surprise when Mr. Stutt opened the packages and found that the jerseys now bore a second insignia, not for Junior’s or Smorgasburg or some other plausibly compatible local institution, but one advertising Fox Sports. “We were like, ‘Holy mackerel, get a load of this — Fox!’ ” Mr. Stutt recounted, pointing out the obvious dissonance between the appearance of the name and playing fields where a team of AYSO children once wanted to name itself the Democrats.

During (the Pope’s) address to Congress yesterday, part of his visit to the United States this week, Pope Francis mentioned radical Catholic activist Dorothy Day as a “great American.” Few Americans today know who Day, who died in 1980, was. Here, we reprint an obituary of her by socialist activist and writer Michael Harrington, who briefly lived alongside Day in a Catholic Worker house in New York City, from the December 10, 1980 issue of In These Times.

  1. Fortunately for me my dad worked with Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker people so I grew up knowing all about her. And I wasn’t surprised when one Catholic Worker member in Los Angeles tried to stop Mahoney from wasting church funds on his huge erection in downtown Los Angeles. Jeff Dietrich sat on the bulldozer. Great group!
