If Betsy DeVos is a friend of a NEA “friend of education” is she a friend too?

Betsy DeVos, my stalker from the Education Action Group which DeVos funded and Senator Lamar Alexander, NEA’s Friend of Education.

I was on the phone this morning with a reporter for a national publication who was writing about Betsy DeVos. It was the latest of a number of calls I have received from reporters because of DeVos’ family foundation funding of  the Education Action Group, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy and the Michigan Republican Party.

And through those connections, her connection to me.

The irony in the delay of the confirmation hearings for DeVos is that she has failed to produce the necessary records.

Ironic, because the Michigan organizations were the ones that were responsible for the Freedom of Information Act requests demanding all of my work emails and personnel files when I was teaching.

EAG got my files. But the confirmation committee is having difficulty getting hers.

Ironic, because the whole reason for the Freedom of Information Act was to put a check on the powerful like her.

It wasn’t intended to be used to try and intimidate volunteer local union presidents and K-5 teachers for their union activity.

“Did you hear from other local presidents who experienced the same thing,” the reporter asked.

I told the reporter that at the time I was told by the IEA union leadership that other local leaders had been subject to these kinds of intimidations.

Will the confirmation hearings hear testimony about the bullying of teachers by Betsy DeVos? I seriously doubt it.

But, speaking of the IEA and the NEA.

Remember when the NEA gave Senator Lamar Alexander their Friend of Education award at their Representative Assembly?

EdWeek reports:

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., the chairman of the Senate education committee, said Betsy DeVos will be an “excellent education secretary” after meeting Tuesday with President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Education.

“I’m looking forward to her hearing because I know she will impress the Senate with her passionate support for improving education for all children. I am fully confident that she will be swiftly confirmed by the full Senate,” Alexander said in a statement.

Is the friend of a friend your friend? What if the friend is Betsy DeVos?
