DeVos, Rahm and Moskowitz.

DeVos

Tomorrow is a busy day for the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.

She starts the day with the school-closer-in-chief, Mayor Rahm.

She ends the day with the Queen of Charters, Eva Moskowitz.

Details are not available to the public. The meetings are closed to the press. The exact locations of the meetings are unknown.

Perhaps Rahm will explain his continuing efforts to shut down neighborhood public schools. His latest plan is to close seven African American high schools in and around Englewood in spite of a declared and contractual moratorium on school closings.

Details are not available to the public.

Or maybe he will be sharing his latest high school graduation requirements. The Mayor-Autorcrat – who disdains the idea of citizens electing their school board – woke up the other morning and decided that CPS students should have a letter of acceptance from a college in order to graduate.

Voila! And so it shall be, says  the Mayor-Autocrat.

I bet Betsy wishes she had such power to make things happen. If only she did our kids would be genuflecting and saying the Lord’s Prayer in school this morning.

Which I had to do in first grade, by the way, having been in first grade before the Supreme Court ruled that religious activity had no place in a public school.

But with Gorsuch plus another Trump appointee to the Court, Betsy might get her way.

Her last meet up of the day is with Eva Moskowitz.

Eva was on the short list to be Secretary of Education.

For those of you who live out of New York, Moskowitz is a pre-eminent charter operator, earning a salary of over half a million bucks a year.

Moskowitz once explained her view of public neighborhood schools: “You can live on a posh street and be zoned for a very terrible school.”

Man. Who can’t relate to that problem?

DeVos is also planning to visit a public school with AFT President Randi Weingarten at a later date.

Details are not available.

  1. The Department of Education Is Spending a Mind-Boggling Amount of Money to Protect Betsy DeVos
Meanwhile the Trump administration plans to slash her department by $9 billion.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has been met with angry mobs since her narrow confimation in mid-February. As a result, the department is spending a staggering $1 million per month to keep her safe, according to the Washington Post. “The [U.S.] Marshals Service is hiring nearly two-dozen people to guard her,” the report finds.

Under an agreement signed in late Month, DeVos will be under its protection through September, but she may use law enforcement agency’s services for the duration of her term….

As News One Now host Roland Martin pointed out Monday, “DeVos’ stance on charter schools and special education has caused protesters to show up at every school she visits.”

  2. The most alarming is the meeting/visitation with Randi. Randi has her seat at the table now and will do a “suck up” job with Heaven’s to Betsy, thus screwing her union dues paying constituents.

  3. Wow! Very clandestine.
I can understand why. I’m sure I’m not the only one who entertained the idea of showing up at the meeting. I have many, many questions for Ms. DeVos.

  4. Wow. Four meetings in one day. Hope she doesn’t overwork herself. She may get drowsy after such a long lunch. Looking at the names listed supports my view that these national ed. org.s don’t mean a thing to the rank and file.

  5. And then there’s this, Chicago:
“CPS Receives Proposals to Open Up to 20 New Charters”

    And this:
“Charter Operators Propose Up to 20 More Schools in CPS”
    chicago.suntimes.com/news/charter-operators-propose-up-to-20-more-schools-in-cps/
From the 2/28/17 article, “Letters of intent were due Friday but weren’t mandatory, so more charter school operators could still submit applications for more schools…”

I bet we know what Rahm will be discussing with Betsy.
And Her Highness will be pleased.
