Some may have a mistaken impression of Chicago’s north west side as a homogeneous, white side of the city.
Not the 33rd Ward.
About a third is white. Half is Latinx. About 10% of the population is Asian. Less than 5% is African American.
For years the 33rd has been run by the Richard Mell Machine Family of the Chicago Democratic Party.
Alderman Dick Mell handed it over to his daughter Deb Mell a few terms back. She was a state representative. In Chicago being an alderman is a step up from being a state rep.
When Deb ran on her own four years ago she barely beat a Chicago teacher.
Then Dick Mell lost his position as Democratic Ward Committeeman to an independent Democrat, Aaron Goldstein.
The writing was right there on the 33rd Ward wall.
Last Monday, Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, an artist, teacher, activist, Puerto Rican native, Democratic Socialist and first time politician, was sworn in as Alderwoman of the 33rd ward.
She was our guest on Hitting Left this week.
