Filmmaker Assia Boundaoui

Being of a certain age and having been a political activist since before the 60s revolts, when someone tells you that the government, the FBI in particular, is watching you and your entire community, you know to believe them.

Assia Boundaoui has the proof of a community being watched by our government.

Assia Boundaoui will be a guest on Hitting Left with the Klonsky Brothers this Friday at 11am on Lumpen Radio, 105.5fm in Chicago and streamed on http://www.lumpenradio.com.

It will be podcast after at http://www.hittingleft.libsyn.com

The community being watched is Bridgeview. It is a suburb of Chicago, roughly 15 miles south west of the Loop. Bridgeview has a large Muslim population

Ms Boundaoui has made a film, released in 2018, that documents the FBI surveillance of town of Bridgeview beginning in the pre-9/11 1990s.

My friend Mike Truchon posted this on our Hitting Left Facebook page.

We live near Bridgeview and I will never forget my first post 9/11 encounter will my wonderful Muslim neighbor. He was nearly in tears telling me not all Muslims are like the terrorists. I felt so bad for him that he even had to say anything to me but I reassured him that 9/11 did not impact our friendship. Soon afterwards I heard stories about FBI surveillance and hate crimes in the area. Only then did I realize what brought on those tears.

“There wasn’t a moment that anyone told me,” Boundaoui has testified.

“It was just something I always knew: We are being watched, and people are looking at us in a different way. I remember watching the [first] Gulf War on TV, and then people responding to my mom wearing a hijab–they were afraid of us, suspicious of us.

When making her film, The Feeling of Being Watched, Boundaoui uncovered 1,000s of pages of declassified FBI documents confirming that Assia’s hometown was in fact the subject of one the largest counter-terrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9-11. It was code-named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.”

As a child of radical parents in the 50s and an activist in the 60s, and through all the years since, I know the feeling of being watched.

You will want to listen to this edition of Hitting Left with Assia Boundaoui.

  1. This is just freaky. We do not know who is being watched. I regularly post anti-Trump comments in a variety of news sources and blogs. In the hands of the wrong people I could be a target to be watched. [I saw the movie Snowden and wonder who is watching me on my computer camera.]
I have a copy of the Holy Qur’an and a stack of anti-Trump, anti-gun posters in my den.

If Muslims have been spied upon without their consent who is next? This is totally out of control.

  2. Fred, the FBI comes up with the name of their investigations with the idea that it may eventually be part of a news story.  “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” To serious to be a joke, are you sure?  Bob Lyons
