Kenosha, Wisconsin is half way between Chicago and Milwaukee. It is really of suburb of both.
It is an everyday commute to both cities.
It’s not a poor town. But the Black community is poor, and Black people make up only 7% of Kenosha County.
The mayor, the police chief and the district attorney are white.
Police stops targeting Black residents is common in Kenosha as it is in many exurbian towns along the Lake between Chicago and Milwaukee.
A few observations about the coverage of the shooting of Jacob Blake and the violence in Kenosha that followed:
Much of the media coverage has been awful.
Last night on both the national and local Chicago news, nobody has mentioned the role of the large white supremacist armed militia in Wisconsin that came to Kenosha and collaborated with the Kenosha police. They openly planned strategy together as captured on video.
The reporting, with some exceptions, suggested that the 17-year old killer, Kyle Rittenhouse, acted alone.
But Chicago reporter Dan Mihalopoulos tweeted:
The press reported the last few nights in Kenosha as “civil unrest.” But that takes the collaboration between the white armed militia and the Kenosha police off the hook.
By the way, reports are that things were quiet Wednesday night. A memorial was held where the protesters were shot and murdered.
Anthony Huber, 26, of Silver Lake and Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, of Kenosha.
Shot in the arm was Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, of West Allis.
