Mayor Lightfoot issued the order yesterday that all city workers must be vaccinated.
The response by Fraternal Order Of Police president John Catanzara was predictable.
“We’re in America goddamn it. We don’t want to be forced to do anything. Period. This ain’t Nazi fucking Germany (where they say) ‘Step into the fucking showers. The pills won’t hurt you.’ What the fuck?”
The language of this Trump loving fascist comparing vaccination mandates to gassing Jews by the Nazis has nothing to with mandating or union bargaining.
It places the police squarely on the side of the dangerous anti-vax movement which has used the fascist killings by the Nazis of 12 millions Jews, Catholics, homosexuals, socialists and communists to justify their campaign of misinformation and conspiracies.
The Mayor should follow through and fire any cop who isn’t vaccinated by the deadline.
On the whole, this matter of mandating Covid vaccinations for public workers has not been my union movements’ proudest hour.
Chicago Federation of Labor President Bob Reiter released the following statement regarding the announcement of a vaccine mandate for City of Chicago workers:
“City of Chicago and other public employees have been sacrificing their health from the very beginning of this crisis, putting their own safety on the line to keep this city moving. The Chicago labor movement has worked tirelessly to protect these heroic workers, from fighting for proper safety procedures to holding vaccination clinics for thousands of union members that were hailed as a ‘model for the country’ by Vice President Kamala Harris.
“We believe in the benefits of vaccination to help protect workers and residents, but we do not believe punitive mandates are the right path to significantly increase vaccine uptake. In fact, we believe this announcement may harden opposition to the vaccine instead of protecting the workers who have sacrificed so much over the past 18 months. We are still in very preliminary discussions with the city about a proposed vaccination policy and we hope this process can be resolved through policymaking, not public communications. However, any discussion around a vaccine policy should include not only medical and religious exemptions, but also testing alternatives as we continue to build trust around the benefits of voluntary vaccination.”
While this is not John Catanzara and the FOP, it plays to the anti-vax and spreaders of vaccine hesitancy among the minority of union members who hold these ideas.
Our union leaders should be leading the efforts to fight this plague.
Number one in that effort is mandatory vaccinations.
What the hell is this stuff about “build trust around the benefits of voluntary vaccination”?
The Covid vaccine has been given the full okay by scientists and medical experts who have the authority and have the knowledge to authorize its use.
Whatever the union leaders think needs to be negotiated about this, go do it. Do it quickly. There doesn’t seem much to talk about to me.
But as of now union leaders have created an image of themselves as opponents of aggressive anti-Covid efforts.
And do they really want to be seen hanging with the likes of John Catanzara?
