The real story of public employee and teacher pension fraud are the lies that demagogue politicians tell.
The Southtown’s Phil Kadner has a column today. Here are some highlights:
- In Illinois, public employees who have state pensions do not receive their social security benefits, even if they are fully vested in the social security system, like me.
- The average public employee pension is around $26,000 a year. That hovers around the poverty line.
- The average teacher pension is $43,000. A full pension requires 35 years in the system.
- “For twenty years, the state has failed to make good on its pension obligations,” says Kadner.
- “By the way, judges in Illinois receive the highest average retirement payment, $8,684 a month, or about $104,000 a year. The typical payout to state legislators is $3,971 a month, or $47,000 a year. That’s for a part-time job and, typically, 14 years in the Legislature and time in some other state position.”
