Illinois lawmakers penciling in December 5th for pension session.

The story is that members of the General Assembly are being asked to pencil in December 5th for a special session to deal with any pension proposal coming from the Gang of Ten.

Excuse me if I am skeptical.

I’m pretty sure a December 5th vote would still require a super majority to pass anything.

The new regular session is in January.

Some lawmakers say they aren’t pushing for a December special session.

State Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, said he is not opposed to waiting until lawmakers return to action in late January to address the pension problem because any changes enacted now or then won’t take effect until June.

“They’d have to pay us extra to come back next month. We could come back in January, and it wouldn’t cost anything,” Forby said.

State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, said he wants to make sure any plan is thoroughly reviewed by all stakeholders before he casts his vote.

“I don’t know if organized labor has seen any of the plan,” said Smiddy, whose wife is a schoolteacher.

  1. Of course they will try to push this through asap so they don’t have to pay the 2014 COLA. Is it stated anywhere in the bill that they can not come back and feed off the retirees again, and again and again? Once the door is opened they will be back for more of our hard earned pensions.

WTF They don’t make spouses the way they used to.

I could be wrong, but I think that the 2014 Cola 1/1/14 is a lock unless there is a super majority. Does anyone know if this is correct? What is the last date that they do not need a super majority to change the 1/1/15 Cola?

As far as I know, unless there is a super majority vote for the change, we will get our COLA, this January. If they vote for a change with a simple majority, the change will take affect on July 1 2014 and we will get our expected COLA due 1/1/14
