65 years ago today the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
Hiroshima was civilian target. 130,ooo were killed immediately. They were mainly women and children. Three days later another atomic was dropped on Nagasaki immediately killing almost 100,000 people.
It is estimated that several hundred thousand people have died from the effects of the bombs in the years since.
Hiroshima was the first example of first strike use of an atomic weapon. Nagasaki was the last.
